02 Mar One day, someone’s going to come in here and say “YOU! You know nothing!” And I’ll go quietly, because it’s true.
‘Doesn’t everyone feel like that?’
Let me explain. I was having a conversation with a client this week about work – and she shared that she had recently had a client of hers come back to her and ask for some work she’d done to be changed. They hadn’t actually said they didn’t like it, or it was bad in any way, but they wanted some changes. My client felt crushed. Despite 10 years of almost uninterrupted praise for her work, and satisfied customers, this one seeming criticism knocked her flat. When I explored further she said: “It’s that feeling of being found out – being a fraud. The worry that maybe I am no good. Doesn’t everyone feel like that?”
This really resonated with me, because I’d heard the same thing from a teaching colleague 20 years ago (it’s her quote in the title of this post), and it had really resonated with me then – because I felt just the same.
I raised this question among business colleagues attending a networking event last week. The results suggest that everyone knew what I was talking about, and had felt that feeling. I’m one of those people too. So now I’m intrigued – Does everyone feel like that?
So the question I’m now asking everyone in my online community is:
Do you ever/sometimes feel that actually you’re not good at [whatever it is you do] and that some day someone will find you out; or have you no idea what I’m talking about?
